A couple of years back, Paul O'Connell and I knocked out this page for issue 11 of his splendid comic The Sound Of Drowning. It was to be the first of many, but we kind of, well, forgot to do any more. Good news: the concept has been re-named and snapped up to appear in the pages of quarterly music magazine The Stool Pigeon, beginning with a reworking of the above episode before moving on to such bizarre yet apparently true musical curios as, well... that would be telling, wouldn't it?

I started on this one... let's see... there's an early version in a post dated August 2008, so it's hardly been speeding hungrily towards the finish line, has it? Still, all the better for being able to rethink and refine it as I go along. Ideally, I'd never finish an illustration. You're always learning new tricks.
Laid some more detail down on this one, although at least one of the troll's arms looks a little awkward; an afternoon's tweaking looks likely. It doesn't help that I've given him noticeably different proportions in the opening shot of the sequence...
... so yeah, time to start bringing them together.

First stages here. A rudimentary sunset and seaside townscape sketched in behind and below. I'm trying to make it look vaguely Brightonesque, although elevated/overhead pics of my adopted hometown seems pretty scant even on the trusty old internet. The holding sketch was cribbed pretty much wholesale from a shot on Flickr - will have to rework it big time so as not to be overly cheeky.
